# SOC 2 or ISO/IEC 27001: which outcome does the buyer need?

> If a buyer names a SOC 2 report or an ISO/IEC 27001 certificate, start with that outcome. If the request is simply “security compliance,” clarify which evidence the procurement process will accept before committing to a project.

## Different outcomes answer different questions

SOC 2 is an independent attestation report about relevant controls at a service organization. ISO/IEC 27001 defines ISMS requirements; independent certification can show that a defined management-system scope conforms to them. A buyer may accept one, require both, or ask for other evidence. A report and a certificate are not interchangeable.

| Dimension | SOC 2 | ISO/IEC 27001 |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Outcome | Report issued by an independent CPA | Management-system certificate from an independent certification body |
| Main question | How are relevant controls designed, implemented and operated for a service? | Does an ISMS operate within the defined organizational scope? |
| Scope | Service, systems, entities and relevant controls | Organization, activities, sites and information assets |
| First clarification | Type 1 or Type 2, period and buyer acceptance | Certificate scope, certification body and buyer acceptance |

## Work backwards from procurement language

Read the exact contract clause, questionnaire or supplier portal requirement. Ask: what outcome is required, which contracting entity and service must it cover, and when is it needed? If the buyer says only “security evidence,” clarify whether a questionnaire, policy set, penetration test, independent report or certificate is acceptable.

## Compare the request with current practice

Only then assess controls, policies, operating records and ownership. An existing risk-management system may provide a foundation for ISO/IEC 27001. A clear request for a SOC 2 Type 2 report means the service scope and operating evidence period need special attention. There is no universal timeline for every organization.

## If both are needed, share the groundwork

Access management, change management, incident response, supplier oversight, risk assessment and evidence retention often support both projects. A shared control and evidence inventory can reduce duplicate effort. The **reporting and certification processes remain separate**, with different independent parties.
